The project, supported by Strategia Fotografia 2023, promoted by the Ministry of Culture’s General Directorate for Contemporary Creativityinvolves seven emerging Italian artists who have been invited to peruse the important photography collections held by FMAV for inspiration to create a new work. All the resulting works will become part of the municipality of Modena’s Galleria Civica Collection, managed by FMAV.

The seven emerging Italian artists involved are Silvia Bigi, Federico Clavarino, Teresa Giannico, Orecchie d'Asino, The CoolCouple, Vaste Programme and Alba ZariChiara Dall'Olio and Daniele De Luigi, curators of the project, asked them to choose works by past maestros from the FMAV-managed collections in which they could find the roots or a reflection of their own work. The new creations, devised and made for the occasion by the invited artists, are not the result of parroting styles, but are contemporary images showing how lines from the history of photography carry on into the present day while engaging in an intergenerational dialectic.

The new works provide an investigation into the use of photography by a new generation of artists, who pay attention principally to image construction and contamination with other media (video, sculpture, performance, sound and new technologies). They will be presented in the exhibitionin a layout designed with the young photographers, alongside works by big names Joan Fontcuberta, Elisa Leonelli, Richard Misrach, ThomasRuff, Ahlam Shibli, FrancoVaccari and Masao Yamamoto. In choosing which artists to invite, a spotlight was shone upon those who use new technologies in creating their photography, in confirmation of FMAV’s commitment to this field (Modena is a UNESCO creative city for the media arts), and to project the collections into the future.
